Your Google Business Profile: The Free Door at the Top

AP By Aaron Phillips · Marketing 101 · Lesson 4 of 10 · Updated June 2026
Short answer: The map pack is free real estate at the top of local search with only 3 spots. Your Google Business Profile is what gets you in. Claim it, pick the right category, add real photos.

There's a piece of prime real estate sitting at the very top of every local search. Above the websites. Above even the paid ads, half the time. It's that little map with three businesses pinned on it. And here's the kicker — it's completely free. You don't pay Google a dime for it. And most of you are either ignoring it, or handing it straight to your competitor.

spots in the Google map pack. If you're one of the three, the phone rings. If you're not, you don't exist — no matter how good you are.

The Map Pack

THE MAP PACK — only 3 spots

It's called the map pack. Somebody types plumber near me, and Google shows a map and picks three businesses to feature right there at the top. Three. Not thirty. If you're one of those three, the phone rings. If you're not, you don't exist — doesn't matter how good you are. And the one thing that gets you into that little box is your Google Business Profile.

Claim It

CLAIM IT — free · 10 minutes

So step one, and I cannot believe I have to say this out loud — claim it. Right now, today, there is probably a Google profile for your business that you have never once logged into. Google made it for you. Go to google .com slash business, prove it's yours, and take the keys. It's free, it takes about ten minutes, and it's the single highest-paying ten minutes in this whole course.

Fill Every Field

FILL EVERY FIELD — categories · area · hours · photos

Once it's yours, you fill out every single field. And I mean every one. Your categories — that's the big one, it tells Google what you actually do. Your service area. Your hours. Your phone number. Photos of real jobs. Posts. The questions and answers. Most guys fill out half of it and quit. The contractor who fills out all of it beats the one who didn't. Every time.

Two Plumbers

COMPLETE profile vs BLANK box — who gets the call?

Here's why it matters. Two plumbers. Same skills, same price, same town. Plumber A claimed his profile, picked the right category, posted twenty real job photos, and answers his reviews. Plumber B has a blank box. No photo, no hours, nothing. Now a homeowner's in a panic with three seconds and wet feet. Who do they call? Every single time, it's the guy who looks real. Plumber B never even knew he was in the race.

Categories & Photos

RIGHT CATEGORY + REAL PHOTOS

Two levers do most of the heavy lifting. Categories and photos. Your primary category should be exactly what you are — emergency plumber, not just contractor. Get that wrong and Google shows you for the wrong searches all day. And photos — real ones. Your trucks, your crew, your finished work. Not stock. Profiles with real photos pull way more calls than the bare ones. It's not even close.

Do This Now

CLAIM · CATEGORY · 10 REAL PHOTOS

Homework, and this one actually moves money. One — claim your profile today, if you haven't. Two — set your primary category to exactly what you do. Three — go take ten real photos of your work and your truck, and upload them. That's it. Ten minutes, ten photos, and you've already done more than half your competitors.

That's your foundation. The free door at the top of the search, working for you around the clock while you're on a job. Now, that map pack sends people somewhere — usually to your website. And a contractor website has exactly one job. Most of them flat-out fail at it. That's Course five. See you there.
